Update from Kiwibank

Need to pay the person who mowed the lawn? Nothing that a quick bank transfer can’t fix. But for some – it’s not always that easy.

In 2019, Kiwibank and the Digital Inclusion Alliance Aotearoa partnered together to hold banking workshops with local community centres. But now times have changed and almost all digital education is done on Zoom. Over 5,144 people have benefited to date – with many commenting that they’re far more confident with online banking and asking for help in the future. Although adapting content for an online environment presents challenges, the workshop’s greater accessibility has meant more people have reached out for support. DORA, the mobile classroom, is still operating under current COVID-19 guidelines so those who cannot access Zoom don’t miss out.

“Our current times have shown how important it is for people to be able to do their banking digitally, so it is great that we have been able to adapt how we are delivering this programme to the current ways of working so that people can still get the education and support that they need. ”Kiwibank Head of Purpose and Sustainability, Julia Jackson.

Now the team are looking to expand the pilot to make delivery of workshops future proof. This will see the establishment of regular classes across New Zealand and hopefully more local community centres getting involved, so ultimately more Kiwi are able to bank safely and confidently online.
